Barry Smith graduated from Oxford University. He is one of the leading scholars of formal ontology. He is currently Julian Park Professor of Philosophy at SUNY Buffalo and Director of IFOMIS, which is devoted to the application of ontology to the biomedical sciences. He worked on the ontology of artworks (The Substitution Theory of Art, Grazer Philosophische Studien, 25/26 (1986), 533–57) and of cultural artefacts in general (From Speech Acts to Social Reality, in Barry Smith, ed., Searle, Cambridge 2003).
